CEFAS are planning to undertake a major survey on Smelt stocks across the Broads. They will be conducting an acoustic tracking study of smelt in the Broads from March 2015. Starting with the tagging commercially caught smelt on the Waveney and tracking their movements throughout the broads area, covering the major waterways from Breydon water upstream.
The map left shows the locations of tracking devices across the Broads system and just how far these species can migrate upstream to spawn.
This survey will help with our understanding of wider fish stocks across the Broads along with the current Pike Tagging project already in progress.
